Japanese Meat Cakes Are All Over the Internet And We’re Sort Of Grossed Out

Scoopnest

As if cakes couldn’t get more…original, Japanese meat cakes are on the rise.

Yes, you read that correctly.

Japanese meat cakes (肉ケーキ or “niku keeki”) are literally plates of raw pork, beef or chicken arranged to look like cakes. We’re assuming some Japanese restaurants are saying goodbye to sweet treats and replacing them with this.

Regardless of how we feel, the world is somehow amped:

お世話になりすぎました? ごちそうさまでした!! #肉ケーキ

From what we’re seeing, this is a birthday or special events thing??? Happy birthday, friend, we got you meat roses:

The trend has been promoted on local television as well as added onto menus outside grilled meat-focused restaurants.

As reported in Kotaku, the restaurants provide grills to cook the meat, so there’s that. The idea is to deconstruct your meal and be provided the opportunity to cook your dinner to your specifications, yourself.

Meat lovers may rejoice in this trend, but as much as we’d love to kill a juicy steak right now, the last thing we want on our birthday is to manhandle raw meat at the table and put in the work to cook the thing.

We have questions, for sure: Do they give you tongs? Or at least anti-bacterial towelettes? What if you’re horrible at grilling? Do waitstaff provide supervision?

SOS. We can’t get behind this until these questions are answered, but if you’re feeling fearless, we recommend you track down a participating restaurant and just…see for yourself.
