Health tip of the day: Cook With Turmeric Or Add It To Your Smoothies For Antioxidant And Anti-Inflammatory Benefits.

Turmeric is trending these days, especially in the wellness world. The nearly 4,000-year-old spice boasts serious antioxidants and anti-inflammatory benefits. Here’s all you need to know about it.

What is turmeric?

Turmeric is an ancient spice that’s native to India and has been important in traditional and herbal medicine, especially for arthritis and digestive issues. There are about 70 varieties of turmeric grown around the world. Part of the ginger family, this spice is related to ginger and cardamom.

What are the health benefits?

A single tablespoon serving of turmeric powder packs 26 percent of your Daily Value (DV) of the antioxidant manganese and 16 percent of your DV of iron, a mineral that’s essential for carrying oxygen to the blood and maintaining energy. This spice has been found to prevent metabolic syndrome, arthritis, anxiety and even help manage exercise-induced muscle soreness.

How can you add turmeric it to your diet?

You can find the dried, powdered form of turmeric at almost any grocery store, but fresh turmeric might be a little harder to find depending on where you shop. However, the spice is popping up more in its fresh form in the produce section of health food stores. You can add turmeric to milk for homemade golden milk lattes, blend it in your smoothie, add it to your rice or use it to season veggies and chicken (our personal favorite).
