Health Tip Of The Day: Eating salad every day may sound like a good idea if you’re trying to be healthy, but it could leave you bloated and deprived of certain key nutrients.

Anyone who has ever attempted to revamp their diet can relate to the tendency to load up on salads. Although they’re generally quite nutritious, there is such a thing as eating too much salad. We know, you’re floored. How could that possibly be true?! Well, let’s break it down.

Too much salad can cause gastrointestinal distress.

The raw veggies that make up your salad are loaded with dietary fiber, which is great for you, but it can cause some serious intestinal discomfort if you don’t up your intake gradually. So if you’re going from eating minimal greens to daily salads, it’s not uncommon to feel gassy, bloated, constipated and straight-up uncomfortable. Instead of solely relying on salads to get your daily dose of greens, consider occasionally cooking your veggies and eating them alongside a protein like chicken or salmon and some brown rice or a sweet potato. When you cook your veggies, the heat breaks down some of their dietary fiber before it reaches your digestive tract, making it easier on your stomach.

You could be missing out on crucial macronutrients.

Salad greens and common toppings will give you an exceptional amount of key vitamins and minerals, but you could be missing out on vital protein and fats if you’re not careful. If you do insist on eating a daily salad for lunch, make sure that you’re adding healthy fats (like olive oil and avocado) and protein (like chicken, tofu or a hard-boiled egg) to the mix and you’re not just munching on a plain ol’ lettuce.
