Here Are The Essential Apps You Need While Abroad

Going on an international vacay? By now, you’ve probably mapped the best airfare, hotel and other travel sites to prep for your big trip. But don’t forget about must-need resources for when you’re actually there. These apps will keep you in the loop with family and friends, show you the best attractions and even help you find the best-rated restaurants from locals.

1. Viber — Free (iOS/Android)

As long as you’re connected to WiFi, you can use Viber to call anyone you want, no matter where they are, for free. Viber users can make free international calls and text each other for free, but both parties need to download the app. If the person you’re calling doesn’t have Viber, you can purchase credits for super cheap international calls. Pretty sweet deal if you ask us.

2. SayHi Translate — Free (iOS/Android)

If you’re heading to a country in which your language isn’t widely spoken, you’ll need a translator app. The easiest option? SayHi Translate. The app functions like Google Translate, but instead of having to type in the phrase you’re trying to understand, you can use the voice function to speak the phrase into your phone. You also have the option to type, but the voice option is definitely handy.

3. Spotted By Locals — $3.99 per city (iOS/Android)

Want to know the shops and restaurants that locals actually go to? Download Spotted By Locals, which is an app made of local guides and tours written by — yep — residents of the place you’re visiting. The best part? You don’t even need WiFi to access the guides and tips on the app once they’re downloaded.

4. The Fork — Free (iOS/Android)

Looking to make reservations at the best restaurants in the area? The Fork will help you find them. This app covers over 30,000 restaurants in a number of cities abroad and can even get you a discount on your meal once you make the reservation.  Saving money while eating the best local fare? Yes, please.

5. Smart Traveler — Free (iOS/Android)

We’re sure you looked into how safe your destination is before heading there, but anything can happen. Be prepared by adding Smart Traveler to your apps list. Smart Traveler was developed by the U.S. State Department and it allows you to receive notifications and alerts on the general safety of an area, whether natural disasters could be a possibility or if there’s an act of violence nearby. You can also register yourself for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program on the app, which gives you the opportunity to mark yourself as safe or reach out for help in the rare case of a national emergency.
