Unless you’re extremely lucky, you’ve probably had your fair share of spam caller experiences. You know, the calls you get from a weird area code or even an unknown number. Typically, you know a spam call is happening within seconds of answering, but that doesn’t make getting them any more pleasant. While we’re sure a skilled spammer knows his or her way around the system, there is one tool that could help cut down on those nasty calls. Yep, it’s the National Do Not Call Registry.

Known affectionately (just kidding, more like informally) as DoNotCall.gov, the website is essentially the national catch-all that helps people deal with spammers. The first thing you should know is that you can actually add your phone number to the national “Do Not Call” list. The website is legit — the registry works directly with the Federal Trade Commission and Federal Communications Commission — so don’t worry about giving your number to just another shady third party. Once you add your number, you’re on the list for life.

Of course, the registry likely won’t hide you from all spam calls in the world. If you add your name to the registry and you still get a spam call after you’ve been on the list for at least 31 days, the website directs you to the FTC to report each spam number you receive calls from.

We can’t guarantee your fight with spam callers are forever over (though we wish we could, fam). What we can tell you, though, is that there are steps you can take to combat each sketchy call you receive. So stop those spammers in their tracks and get your number on that registry.
