It doesn’t matter where you do your grocery shopping, it’s always good to be mindful of your budget. And, there are ways to shop at Whole Foods without spending an excessive amount of cash. (Yes, seriously.)

CEO of Whole Foods John Mackey spoke with mindbodygreen and discussed everything from what foods people should avoid to the best way to spend $20 at the health food chain.

“I would tell people to buy several meals they could base around starch foods, like some kind of brown rice, legume, or sweet potatoes,” he said. “And then I would say, buy the seasonal vegetables. That’ll be your healthiest, most economical diet. They’re a bit more expensive, but if you can throw some nuts and seeds on there, you’re basically good to go.”

Whole Foods gives people the opportunity to buy healthy food that they can actually feel good about eating. Bonus: After the recent Amazon buyout, there’s hope that shopping at Whole Foods could actually become even more affordable. We hope all of this speculation becomes a reality.

For extra savings, you can download the Whole Foods app to get free coupons and recipes, or use a cash-back app like Ibotta to get deals on certain generic foods like milk or fruit. You can also follow Whole Foods, or any large grocery chain, on its social media channels to hear about deals before anyone else.

If you bring your own tote bags to the store, you’ll save around 5 or 10 cents per bag. Buy frozen meats and fish and pick your own cheese instead of falling for the pre-wrapped kind near the cheesemongers. It’s also important to know when you should buy the name brand and when it’s ok to go generic.
