Here’s How To Keep Your Water From Overboiling

It’s okay to admit that you’ve overboiled your water a significant number of times if your life. We all have. One second, it’s all fun and games, and the next second, you’re on the floor with a roll of paper towels. It happens. But you can easily prevent this situation from happening if you have a wooden spoon or a flat mesh strainer.

A lot of home cooks and even chefs may tell you to use the wooden spoon technique. You just rest the handle of the spoon on the lip of the pot. The wooden handle will pop the bubbles and prevent them from going overboard. Since the spoon is cooler than the bubbles, the bubbles turn back into liquid as soon as they hit the spoon.

The only problem with this technique is that, eventually, the spoon and the water will both be pretty hot, rending the spoon method ineffective. So keep this in mind and don’t leave the pot unattended for a lengthy period of time. Another option is to just replace the wooden spoon with another wooden spoon once it gets too hot.

A second technique you could try, if you don’t have success with the wooden spoon method, is the flat mesh strainer route. Place one of those handy flat strainers — one that you’d put over a pot of water when you’re draining your pasta — over the top of the water while it’s boiling. Since it’s a strainer, there’s plenty of space for the water to breath, but the bubbles will break when they hit the surface.

We have no doubt that one of these methods will work for you and your days of overboiling will be over. Of course, if you’re an extra patient person and you don’t mind hovering over the stove the entire time, you really don’t have to worry at all. So pass these tips along to anyone in your life who struggles to sit still.
