Health Tip Of The Day: Counting macros can help you shift your focus from food quantity to food quality while still seeing progress towards your health goals. Here’s how to do it.

What Are Macros?
Your body uses macronutrients for fuel, which means your day-to-day energy is impacted by the macros you consume. Every food is made up of a combination of macros, which consist of protein, fat and carbohydrates. Almost all foods have a combination of two or more macronutrients but are categorized by the macro they contain the most of. For example, that handful of almonds you snack on at your desk would count as a fat, even though they also have some carbohydrates and protein packed in.

So Why Track Your Macros?
If counting calories makes you cringe, tracking your macronutrient intake might be a better way to stick to a healthy diet. The macro diet promotes a focus on the quality of food that you eat, since factoring in the components of your plate make you less likely to reach for a nutrition-lacking bag of potato chips. Fitness experts often promote tracking macros over counting calories because it allows dieters to be less restrictive on the quantity of food that they eat. Instead, it challenges you to eat wholesome, nutritious foods and to eat the appropriate balance of essential macros. Want to learn how to count your macros? Click through for more info.
