This Abandoned Chinese Fishing Village Will Take Your Breath Away
Finding a beautiful abandoned place is like hitting a goldmine. With nothing around, but pure nature, you get the opportunity to marvel at what is in front of you. This Chinese fishing village, Houtouwan, is no exception. It’s been abandoned since the ’90s it’s village is strikingly beautiful. Make a plan to see it for yourself — you won’t regret it.
Houtouwan, which used to be home to over 2,000 fishermen and their families, is now overtaken by vegetation. The small town sits on the Shengshan Island, which is part of a cluster of 400+ islands off the coast.
Once the ’90s hit, residents started moving away, complaining that there was poor education and few convenience factors — like restaurants and food delivery. Since then, hundreds of tourists have come to the island to explore Houtouwan in all its natural glory.
Almost every building is covered in greenery. You can walk the paths and take in the vividly gorgeous sight despite the fact that there really are no “attractions.” Visitors can take the bus from Shanghai, then take a ferry.
If (recently) untouched places interest you, Houtouwan should be on your bucket list. We can guarantee your Insta pics will be on point, and you’ll see a little piece of abandoned Chinese history.
