Health Tip Of The Day: Fitting healthy snacks into your day can help fill you up and curb unhealthy cravings, keep you from overeating and it may even help you lose weight.
The benefits of daily snacks.
Having a healthy mid-morning and mid-afternoon snack can help you feel full until your next meal and keep you from overeating when the time comes. One 2014 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that participants who ate two high-protein and high-fiber snack bars a day consumed an average of 425 fewer calories per day. If you’re looking to lose weight, those calories saved can seriously help you get closer to your ideal weight over time! We’re all about losing weight without starving yourself and healthy snacks can make your weight loss journey a lot less grueling.
How to choose a healthy snack.
Instead of choosing packaged granola bars and store-bought trail mix to munch on between meals, consider making your own healthy snack at home. Many seemingly “healthy” pre-packaged snacks contain a sneaky amount of added sugar, which can make you crash later in the day. Instead, opt for a homemade snack that combines protein, fiber-filled complex carbohydrates and fat and yields between 200 and 300 calories. Examples include:
-Cottage cheese and fruit
-Greek yogurt, fruit and a handful of nuts
-Nut butter, sliced banana and chia seeds on whole-wheat toast
