5 Cheap Liquors That Don’t Taste Like Sh*t

Do the words “cheap liquor” take you back to that unfortunate college party when your friend made jungle juice with 100-proof Vladdy and you cried in the bathroom for an hour and a half? To be fair, that’s a normal reaction. Believe us, though, when we say that there are some budget-friendly liquors out there that won’t make you regret the day you were born. Here are five solid options if you’re trying to save a few bucks without compromising on flavor (or your own mortality).

1. Rum — Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum, $22.49 for 750ml

With over 994 5-star votes on TotalWine.com, Captain Morgan Black Spiced Rum tops the list of best affordable rum options. The liquor is aged in oak and possesses a full-bodied, spicy flavor. You can enjoy it with dark sodas like coke or a crisp ginger beer (to make dark n’ stormies of course).

2. Vodka — Tito’s Handmade Vodka, $19.99 for 750 ml

Coming in hot with a rating of 4.68 out of 5 (from over 15,000 whopping reviews) on Influenster, Tito’s is a clear winner for the best cheap vodka. One reviewer described the liquor as “smooth, reasonably priced, gluten free (if that is a dietary restriction you have) and typically accessible everywhere due to its rise in popularity.” Like most vodkas, you can mix Tito’s with just about anything including sodas, tonic water and juices.

3. Whiskey — Evan Williams Kentucky Straight Bourbon, $16.99 for 750 ml

In a taste test of 10 bottles of cheap whiskey, Thrillist reported an A+ for Evan Williams Straight Bourbon. The flavor profile of the whiskey was  described as “bold” with an “additional flavor that almost tastes like dessert.” Feel free to drink this baby straight or mix with your preferred mixer.

4. Tequila — Espolòn Reposado, $24.99 for 750ml

Finding a good and cheap tequila is an insanely difficult task. Nothing is worse than a warm shot of bad tequila. Vinepair rates Espolòn Reposado as one of the top budget-friendly tequilas out there because of its surprisingly smooth taste and its long aging process that allows for notes of “vanilla and toffee” to shine through.

5. Gin — Beefeater Dry Gin, $19.87 for 750 ml

With a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars on Master of Malt, Beefeater gin makes the top of the list of best low-cost gins. Reviews describe its flavor profile as “slightly floral” with a light hint of citrus. One reviewer in particular said, “This came out surprisingly well in a blind tasting I did with friends, by far the best of the big brand names. Juniper smell is distinctive but not overwhelming, taste is slightly fruity, clean and overall very pleasant.”
