Artists, Here’s How You Could Live In Glacier National Park For Free

Interested in spending four weeks in Glacier National Park working on your artistic passion project and living for free? Turns out, it’s entirely possible.

Glacier’s Artist-In-Residence program allows “artists time to creatively explore the natural and cultural resources in Glacier’s awe-inspiring landscape,” according to a post on the park’s Instagram account.

“Artist” is defined pretty loosely. You could spend those 28 days doing writing fiction, creating clay sculptures or sewing quilts. Up to three people can apply as one project if each person’s style uses a different medium.

While artistic discipline is up for interpretation, you do have to create something that speaks to the mission of the park. You could paint pictures of Glacier’s preserved natural beauty, write about international peace or indigenous people’s history, or photograph the effects of climate change. And you don’t even need to donate the final product to the park. Your artwork still belongs to you, as long as you provide Glacier with a digital copy.

Artists get to live in a furnished cabin on the shore of Lake McDonald. Yes, your home will have one of the most loved views of the entire park. There’s no cell service or internet, but you don’t need it to get your creative process flowing, right? You can truly live the pre-smartphone artist life here.

There is a $20 application fee (but the money covers the cost of the residency). The are four four-week sessions held in June, July, September and October of next year and applications are due on January 31. Get creating, artsy folks!
