You know those days when your brain just won’t focus and everything besides your actual work seems like a valid distraction? It’d be nice if there was a reset button you could press to fire up your brain into the ultimate productive mode, but that’s not realistic. There are certain foods, however, that have been shown to improve brain function, get your focus into check, improve your memory and put you in a naturally better mood. When coffee doesn’t cut it anymore, here are 13 go-to foods that’ll improve your focus.

1. Avocados

Avocados are unlike any other fruit. They’re creamy, they go with everything and their health benefits are off the charts. On top of all that, avocados are one of the best natural food sources for focusing at work. The versatile fruit enhances blood flow since it’s packed with monosaturated fats (the healthy kind). Better blood flow leads to better brain cell function, which can lead to sharper concentration. So next time you’re at the restaurant and someone asks, “Did you wanna add avocado on that? It’s only a $1.50!” you should probably just nod your head and treat yo self.

2. Fatty Fish

If you’re already eating sushi for lunch, give yourself a pat on the back because you’re feeding your brain. Fatty fish like salmon and mackerel are high in Omega-3 fatty acids, which are polyunsaturated fats with a grocery list of health benefits, and can help with memory, improve your concentration and your mood. If you’re deficient in Omega-3’s, you might notice mood swings, depression or fatigue. If you don’t actually like the taste of fish, you can always take fish oil in liquid form or by capsule, otherwise, keep on ordering those salmon avocado rolls.

3. Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is one of those rare foods that is equally as good for you as it is delicious and addicting. Not only is dark chocolate one of the best sources of antioxidants, but it’s loaded with soluble fiber and minerals. A study examined the effects of healthy volunteers who consumed high-flavanol cocoa for 5 days. The results showed improved blood flow to the brain. Cocoa contains stimulant substances similar to caffeine, which may be a reason for short term improved brain function. Why should you deny yourself the good stuff when it can actually make you more productive?

4. Leafy Greens

Incorporating regular servings of leafy greens into your diet (kale, Swiss chard, romaine lettuce, spinach, etc.) can help to slow down mental deterioration, according to research. Green leafy vegetables are loaded with Vitamins A and K, which can help you maintain strong bones and fight inflammation. Your salad greens are also packed with magnesium, iron, B Vitamins, protein and fiber. All of these nutrients can help to keep you calm and remain focused during the day while fighting against stress and sluggishness.

5. Blueberries

Chowing down on a fresh bowl of blueberries in the morning can help to stimulate your concentration and memory for up to five hours because of all the antioxidants they contain. A study at the University of Reading found that these antioxidants help to stimulate the flow of oxygen and blood to your brain in order to keep your mind fresh. Eating blueberries, or other antioxidant-rich fruits, can help prevent you from crashing in the afternoon and get you through long exams or challenging days at the office.

6. Coconut Oil Popcorn

Snacking on popcorn is a pretty healthy way to get from meal to meal since it provides you with fiber and carbohydrates. Coconut oil is heart-healthy and can actually help your body run smoother. The carbs from the popcorn will also help to boost your energy while the healthy fats from the coconut oil will leave you full and satisfied.

7. Green Tea

While it seems simple, green tea is one of the best natural remedies to help you focus. The time-honored brew contains an amino acid called L-Theanine, which is associated with relaxation. It’ll keep you calm and ready to tackle the day. Green tea also has caffeine in it, so that obviously adds to your alertness, but the L-Theanine controls the rate that the caffeine is released, so it’ll hit you slower, allowing your body to avoid a big crash in the middle of the day. These two ingredients work together and can improve your productivity.

These brain foods are simple and easy to incorporate into your daily routine. Plus, you don’t have to worry about any side effects.
