Elon Musk’s Newest Venture Could Let You Fly Across The World In Under An Hour
So, Elon Musk is insane — in a good way. From working on the first-ever U.S. hyperloop train to his recent announcement of plans to build the first city on Mars, Musk’s dedication to advanced technology has us pumped for the future. This new idea, though, might just take the cake. HuffPost reports that Musk is attempting the near-impossible: repurposing the rockets that would travel to Mars for flying you around the world…in under an hour.
Musk presented the concept at the 2017 International Astronautical Congress in Australia and specified that the rockets, called BFR, would travel at speeds of up to 17,000 miles per hour. Airfare tickets would be available to the public, and — total shocker — the price to fly would be similar to a standard economy airline ticket, according to Musk.
If he succeeds in this venture, you could fly from New York City to Los Angeles in 25 minutes, dramatically cutting down airtime from the normal five-to-six-hour flight. A flight from New York City to Shanghai, normally 15 hours, would be cut down to just 39 minutes.
Musk says that the rockets could potentially carry up to 850 passengers per trip.
Obviously, we don’t know when, or if, these plans will unfold. Musk has a lot of work to do on getting the rockets to Mars before converting the rockets to beefed up airplanes. Regardless, we cannot wait to see if he can pull it off.
