Drunken Donuts Could Make Mondays So Much Brighter
When it comes to the morning pastry space, little has changed in the donut world, but a Colorado eatery is taking the humble eat-and-run breakfast staple to decadent new heights.
How? By adding the one ingredient that has been painfully missing: booze.
Denver’s Habit Doughnut Dispensary, known for artisanal creations like the Hella Nutella (Nutella cremeux filling, Nutella ganache, white chocolate drizzle and toasted hazelnuts) and its malted-milk glazed or blazed (bruléed) classics, will add your choice of alcohol to your donut order.
The dispensary serves the alcohol – it has a full bar – in a plastic pipette stuck directly into the donut. The pipette can be removed and the alcohol consumed, although daring consumers could conceivably inject the booze directly into their donuts. It’s unclear what effect, if any, this might have on the pastry’s structural integrity. We’ll leave that to the engineers.
The dispensary has taken this step as a natural evolution: customers could previously order a donut and a shot.
In an interview with Thrillist last October, store manager Hayley Charles recounted the history of the drunken donut. “The pipettes were debuted approximately four months ago although yes, we have had alcohol shooters alongside our doughnuts since the beginning of Habit time,” Charles told the site. “In terms of availability, we can essentially do anything you want, that’s the best part about it! Carbon Cafe & Bar (sister to Habit Doughnut Dispensary) has a full bar so any alcohol a customer wants infused into their donut; whether that be vodka, whiskey, rum, etc, we got it covered.”
Habit pastry chef Jason Graf also incorporates various liquors into some of his creations, including a Grand Marnier-flambéed confection. The French Toast donut has a pipette loaded with maple syrup.
