Dokebi: Treasured Korean BBQ in Williamsburg

[tw-divider]The Scoop[/tw-divider]

  • Tucked away on a quiet stretch of Grand Street is Dokebi, a neighborhood Korean BBQ joint, by the Brooklyn trailblazer Chul Kim. Dokebi’s menu incorporates Kim’s passion for using organic and healthy ingredients and almost everything on the menu, right down to the kimchi, is made in-house
  • The restaurant has earned itself a loyal fanbase over the years, mostly by word of mouth — a true testament to Kim’s comforting Korean cuisine and homey atmosphere. The interior is airy with wooden benches, bright red furniture throughout, and full-sized bar with a solid beer selection
  • Regulars will steer you towards the short rib or spicy mushroom tacos (served on corn tortillas at $5 a piece). Front runners also include the bibimbap, soondubu, and cook-your-own-style BBQ — go for the bulgogi (thinly sliced ribeye), kalbi (short rib), and samgyeopsal (pork belly). All of the meat is covered with a housemade BBQ marinade and each dish comes with complimentary banchan (side dishes that mark the beginning of a Korean meal, like pickled radishes and seasoned bean sprouts)
[tw-divider]Insider Tip[/tw-divider]
Kim has created a Brooklyn empire for himself with Dokebi, Little Dokebi, the Kimchee Market (serving freshly made Kimchi and rare Korean ingredients), a local Williamsburg bar called Golden Years, and a specialty wine and liquor store. His dedication is evident and he strives to be completely self-sufficient by supplying his own produce for his restaurants
