This DIY Herbal Facial Steam Will Be The Most Relaxing Thing You’ll Ever Experience
Sometimes, on particularly rough days, you just need to bring the spa to you. And while everyone else is freaking out over super cleansing and exfoliating activated charcoal masks, we’re digging a DIY option that’s a lot less harsh and a lot more sensual.
Enter herbal facial steams.
They are quite possibly the easiest DIY spa treatment out there, and they feel beyond soothing for the mind, body and soul. They are 100 percent natural and come to your skin’s aid, especially in the wintertime when the air is naturally void of all of its important humidity.
So take 15 minutes for your skin and your stress levels today and give this relaxing, aromatic facial a try.
First things first, you have to pick your dry herbs. Open tea, spice and herb markets are the best places to do so because you have a wide variety of options in front of you. You can customize the amount you want to purchase, and you can decide which scents go together best for your preferences and needs. You can also purchase pre-blended bags from many natural apothecary brands if you don’t mind spending more. And, your panty might have some options that will work just fine in a pinch. Any herbal tea blend will suffice. Think chamomile, lavender, rose hips, elderberries and mint.
Now, grab that tea kettle and boil a large pot of filtered water. While you’re waiting for the water to boil, either grab a large heat-safe bowl or close the drain in your bathroom sink. If you picked out some loose herbs, toss them into a small bowl and gently mix them. If you grabbed a variety of herbal tea bags, cut them open and mix their contents in a small bowl. Snag a hand towel from your closet or bathroom and keep it nearby.
Once the water is boiling, take it off the heat and carefully pour it into your bowl or sink. Then sprinkle all of the herbs on top of the water. Grab the towel and drape it over the back of your head as you lean forward over the mixture, trapping all of the steam rising from the bowl between the surface of the water and your skin.
Settle into a comfortable position here and simply take nice, long, deep breaths of the aromatic steam. Close your eyes, and move closer or further away from the water’s surface depending on how the heat feels on your face. (Obviously, don’t touch the super hot water.) Let the herbs help you find a sense of peace and relaxation as the steam rehydrates your skin, opens your pores and nurtures your sinuses. You can stay here until the water is cool enough to where it’s no longer giving off steam.
For the best skin care results, wash your face and remove any makeup before completing the facial steam so your pores can really get the most from the experience. And to reap the biggest mental and emotional benefits, keep your phone on silent and far, far away during this critical self-care time.
