Everyone’s experienced some unusual stuff on an airplane (and maybe even blocked it out). Even one of our own editors was stuck on a runway in San Juan, Puerto Rico as the flight crew shooed iguanas off the tarmac. All you can do is hope the nonsense doesn’t cut into your vacation time. Here are some of our favorite stories from around the internet about insanely weird reasons for flight delays and in-air awkwardness.
1. The Trapped Kiddo
“When I was a young kid, maybe 4 or 5, I went to the airplane bathroom on a cross-country flight to pee. When I was done, I went to unlock the door, but it wouldn’t open. I started panicking, crying, banging on the door. They couldn’t make me listen through the door, so the pilot gets on the PA over the whole plane and tries to talk me down. They got some tools and unjammed the door, and when I came out, the entire plane started clapping and cheering,” Reddit user nater255 posted.
2. The Stinky Bathroom
A 2016 British Airways flight bound for Dubai was evacuated due to an overflowing toilet. “Cabin crew were unable to fix the problem and the smell became unbearable for passengers seated nearby, forcing the plane to turn around near Brussels and land at Heathrow Airport,” according to The Daily Mail.
3. The Drinking Game
“I was on a flight last night and the only Americans on the plane were playing beer pong with each other from across the aisle,” Reddit user LeMattJM shared.
4. The Passenger Altercation
A Beijing-bound plane departed from China and turned right around within three hours, due to an unruly passenger that started a fight with a flight attendant. According to People, “A customer initiated an altercation with a member of the flight crew, causing a safety concern.” Everyone on the flight had to be rebooked on a flight the next day, but they did get hotel vouchers for a decent night’s sleep for the meantime.
5. The Underwear Athletes
“My father is a pilot and apparently one time when he was flying a flight back to Australia, the champion Australian rugby team was flying back on his flight. They rented out the entirety of first class, and the moment the flight reached cruising altitude, stripped down to their boxers. Allegedly they were some of the most polite patrons he had seen, but were just mostly naked,” Reddit user hubberbubber posted.
6. The Chrissy Teigen Epic
Somehow, a passenger snuck onto an All Nippon Airways flight with a United ticket – and Chrissy Teigen live tweeted the whole process of learning the entire plane had to turn around. “4 hours into an 11 hour flight and we are turning around because we have a passenger who isn’t supposed to be on this plane. Why…why do we all gotta go back, I do not know,” Teigen tweeted. The journey from LAX and back again lasted 8 hours, and then there was the original flight time to Tokyo still to come.
7. The Cheating Hubby
“I was on crutches and they called a flight attendant who was scheduled for a different flight later to wheel me on to the plane since she was just waiting around. She’s helping me get in my seat when she sees her husband. With another woman sucking on his face. Sitting together on the plane. In matching shirts. What I could tell from the screaming match that irrupted, he’d told her he was going away on business to some other place than where this plane was headed. The cheapskate didn’t even pony up for a different airline because he could fly for free on his wife’s. The worst part? Her supervisor led her off the plane and as he was chastising her told her she would likely lose her job over the “public display”. I really hope she didn’t. I spoke to the supervisor on her behalf to try and explain, but who knows,” Reddit user ligamentary shared.
8. The 18-Hour 8-Hour Itinerary
“30 minutes into a flight from Zurich to Philadelphia we were told that the main pressurization system had gone bad, and even though the backup would work just fine, we couldn’t cross the Atlantic on the backup. So we circled over the UK for three hours to become light enough to land in Manchester. Because the flight was from Switzerland to the US, we weren’t allowed to deplane in Manchester. So we sat there for another three hours. Then, we were cleared to fly to Boston, not PHL, because the crew had to change or something of that sort. So we flew to BOS. Again, we weren’t allowed to deplane. After an hour and a half in BOS we finally made our way to PHL. What was supposed to be an 8-1/2 hour flight became like 18 hours.” – Reddit user spader1 explained.
