Ravenous readers, we know where in the world you’ll want to find your next book this winter. These warm and welcoming bookshops around the world are the perfect places to spend an afternoon when the weather gets dreary. Here are six independent bookstores in six cities that we’ve added to our hit list.

Note: The coziest bookshops come with a cat, so we’ve given you a heads up on where you might run into a feline friend while browsing for your next read.

1. Shakespeare and Company – Paris, France

Even if you weren’t looking for a reading corner in Paris, you have to make a stop at this shop. Shakespeare and Co. is a destination in itself. Ernest Hemmingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald borrowed books here, and modern writing stars often do readings on the premises.

*Shakespeare and Co.’s cat hangs out upstairs, usually snoozing on a pile of old books.

2. Mr. B’s Emporium of Reading Delights – Bath, U.K.

Mr. B’s has a private Reading Booth room where hardcore readers can go, munch on cakes, drink some tea and hungrily devour their latest book purchase. For the true fan, book a Book Spa experience. It includes a gift certificate for a book, some one-on-one book talk time with Mr. B. himself, cake, coffee, access to the Reading Booth and a goodie bag of book swag.

3. The Last Bookstore – Los Angeles, United States

It’s possible half of the Instagram’s snapped in Downtown Los Angeles are taken here. This gorgeous bookstore has a book labyrinth, antique tunnel of books and well-worn armchairs for diving into the selection. There are so many books here that the uncategorizable go into their own section, arranged by color and heavily discounted.

4. Books Actually – Singapore, Singapore

This shop has the largest collection of English language books in Singapore, ranging from fiction novels to poetry to current affairs. Those looking for the boutique book experience will love the store’s literary-themed collectibles, all laid out with a shabby chic vibe.

*Multiple cats hold court here, catnapping on unopened boxes or stretching out in an empty aisle.

5. The English Bookshop at Cook & Book – Brussels, Belgium

Part restaurant, part bookstore, Cook and Book is exactly what it sounds like. It’s a cook book shop! You can browse recipes while eating the onsite chef’s creations, or learn about flavor profiles while brunching. It’s a foodie bookworm delight.

6. Book Lounge – Cape Town, South Africa

Coffee and books is the name of the game here. Oh, and children’s story time. It’s an old-school spot, none of the in vogue minimalism with hard benches and metal stools. You can sink into an armchair with a hefty tome of a novel and stay for a while at Book Lounge.
