In just a few months, it’ll be 2018. And you know what that means, there’s an entire new year of travel to plan and it’s time to figure out how to use those vacation days.

According to Lonely Planet’s team of experts, these are the five top countries you should consider visiting in 2018.

1. Chile

The new year will be Chile’s 200th year of Independence, so there’s never been a better time to explore the very tip of the South American continent. Capital city Santiago is a trendy metropolis within the mountains, while adventurers can also head to the remote Torres Del Paine National Park in Patagonia.

2. South Korea

Home to this year’s winter Olympics, South Korea will be in the spotlight in 2018. There’s a new high-tech, high-speed railroad line for the occasion, although neon capital city Seoul already represents a glowing beacon of the future.

3. Portugal

Portugal’s food, wine and art scene would be enough to put the destination on the tourism map for 2018, but the small coastal country also boasts 300 Blue Flag beaches (an award given to eco-friendly and sustainable marine locations).

4. Djibouti

Dive with whale sharks or sunbathe on a tropical beach in Djibouti. The country is positioned on top of three tectonic plates that are actually in the process of pulling the area apart – at a very slow, very safe geological pace.

5. New Zealand

New Zealand lays claim to the Adventure Capital of the World, Queensland. And the country is building a new adventure: a nine-day trail through the South Island.
