Us millennials are killing the hotel business… or so we’ve been hearing for years. But we think we just expect more from our vacations. We don’t want to go somewhere that feels just like the Days Inn down the road — we want to feel connected to the places to which we travel. So since we can always rent an Airbnb in a neighborhood away from the bustle of tourists, hotels have to step it up. Here are three hotel chains trying to change the game and make the overall hotel experience less stuffy and more fun — all within your price range.

Radisson RED

Radisson RED is going for the ‘gram. In this day and age, it’s important for a hotel to be Instagram-worthy. That’s how you get fashionable travelers to pick your place over a shabby chic Airbnb nearby. Travelers tend to document every aspect of their vacations, including downtime at a hotel, so Radisson has added emphasis on storytelling, making sure that even though you’re staying at a big brand hotel, the decor matches the destination instead of a corporate color palette. As for price, the cheapest room in Glasglow would be about $75 split between two people.

Hyatt Centric

In 2015, Hyatt launched a venture called Hyatt Centric that’s focused on bringing in young people and making them feel at home in their hotels. They added common spaces for co-working and there are concierges ready to recommend a cool bar better than Yelp can that’s more popular with the locals. And it’s not totally outside the price range you’d pay for an Airbnb. For instance, if you and three friends split a room with two queen beds in New Orleans, you’d each pay $75.

Marriott Residence Inn

Residence Inn partnered with MapMyFitness to create running routes beginning from each of their 700+ locations. The idea is to connect people to the neighborhood they’re staying in through exercise, leading them through a mini sightseeing venture as they jog. They also host events at many locations with local food trucks so you can sample some authentic favorites from around town. A room at the Residence Inn in Miami would run you about $100, split between two people.
