Type In Your ZIP Code And Find Out What’s Hiding In Your Drinking Water
If you haven’t thought about what’s in your tap water, it’s time. The Environmental Working Group (EWG) released a new database where you can enter your ZIP code and learn what chemicals are found in your H2o. Spoiler alert: the findings are terrifying.
LiveScience reports that the database, which went live on July 26, offers a full report of harmful contaminants that lurk in regular ol’ tap water. The database compiles the water testing results from 2010 to 2015, conducted by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Around 50,000 water utilities from all 50 states were thoroughly tested for dozens of hazardous chemicals, many of which have been linked to a number of cancers. The EPA also included water test reports that state agencies conducted throughout the nation.
Perhaps you’re lucky and your drinking water was found to have no contaminants, but it doesn’t look good for the majority of the country. Over 270 extremely harmful chemicals were found in drinking water in most states. Contaminants like arsenic and lead were found in all 50 states.
No matter what you find in your water, you can learn more about how to filter those contaminants out. Don’t freak out just yet — take extra care in filtering your water and you’re that much less likely to ingest chemicals.
