Here Are The World’s 50 Best Restaurants
Every year, chefs, restaurateurs and epicureans around the world wait in anticipation for The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list to be revealed. The list, now in its 15th year, is produced by the British magazine Restaurant, which is based on a poll of international chefs, restaurateurs, gourmands and restaurant critics. There’s also the Chef’s Choice list which is based on the votes of the fifty head chefs from the restaurants on the previous year’s list. The top spot last year went to Osteria Francescana — chef Massimo Bottura’s tiny venue in Modena, Italy. This year, the number one spot goes to New York City’s Eleven Madison Park.
Eleven Madison Park (EMP) secured the top honor for the first time ever. The restaurant started as a French-American brasserie in 1988, and at the time was owned by restaurateur Danny Meyer. In 2006, the upscale eatery was transformed by Swiss-born chef Daniel Humm and co-owner Will Guidara, who also co-owns the NoMad restaurant. Since Humm and Guidara took over EMP, the restaurant has transformed into an extravagant world-renowned tasting menu destination. It’s the second American restaurant to hold this high honor, right after Thomas Keller’s French Laundry. The eight-course dinner menu is $295 a head, with service included. Wine pairings start at $175. Probably the most lavish items on the dinner menu are the caviar benedict, Humm’s lavender duck with Sichuan peppercorns and the 140-day dry-aged beef. Make sure to book your reservations at least a month in advance because things get crazy at this hot spot.
The 2017 winners were announced at an awards ceremony at the historic Royal Exhibition building in Melbourne, Australia. This year’s list represents a broad range of cultures and cuisines and includes restaurants from 22 countries across five continents. Here are the world’s 50 best restaurants:
