7 Of The Best Places To Snag A Classic Po-Boy In New Orleans
Ah, New Orleans — the city where binge drinking, live music and a rich history all convene to create one beautiful, loud and messy culture. And with this incredible culture comes delicious food in all forms, from jambalaya to chargrilled oysters and, of course, po-boy sandwiches. Po-boys were invented in the city back in the 1920s and have deep ties to the identity (and endless appetite) of this crazy city. So regardless of whether it’s your first or fifteenth time visiting the Big Easy, check out this list of the seven best po-boys in New Orleans to make your culinary experience extra special.
1. Domilises
This uptown lunch staple carries a cult following among New Orleanians, as it has been family owned and producing top-tier sandwiches for more than 100 years. Currently run by the third and fourth generation of Domilise’s, the restaurant has a line running down the corner of Annunciation and Bellecastle daily, and you better bet that each of those patrons is ready to devour a fried seafood or roast beef po-boy.
2. Mother’s
From 7 a.m. to closing, Mother’s will have a line out the door and around the block as well. But don’t be discouraged — this famous joint, which serves breakfast all day long, moves quickly to get you seated and eating happily in record time. Bring some loose pants and try as many plates possible, from the turtle soup to the fried chicken with dirty rice and, of course, their famous Ferdi Special —a fresh po-boy layered with ham, roast beef and their original au jus gravy.
3. R&O Restaurant
Situated right on Lake Ponchartrain, this family establishment offers a blend of Italian, Cajun and Southern Louisiana seafood flavors all in one meal. As soon as you walk in, you’re welcomed with a warm smile and a full menu. Come solo, with a friend or with a crowd and choose from any of the likes of broiled or fried seafood, pasta, pizza and an unreal special ham and roast beef with swiss po-boy.
4. The Milk Bar
If you want to take a break from all of the fried seafood, check out The Milk Bar. Situated right off of South Carrolton in uptown New Orleans, this funky spot serves a different take on the classic po-boy. From the sautéed shrimp to the Thai chili chicken, each po-boy is hot and cheesy and will blow your taste buds away. If you’re feeling extra hungry, pair the sandwich with any of their delicious milkshakes, smoothies or salads.
5. Bevi’s Seafood
Bevi’s Seafood is the place to go for both an epic crawfish boil and a delicious po-boy. With two locations in New Orleans (in Metairie and Mid-City), this seafood market never disappoints. Grab a seat at one of the picnic tables outside and a daiquiri from the bar, and devour any of their fresh seafood offerings.
6. Parkway Bakery & Tavern
This Mid-City staple has been serving their renowned over-stuffed fried shrimp and roast beef po-boys since the 1920s. Be prepared to wait a bit — sometimes for over an hour — and visit on a sunny afternoon so you can take full advantage of happy hour specials. Any of the po-boys on the menu will be worth your time, but we’re partial the roast beef and gravy or steamed corn beef brisket picks.
7. Luizza’s by the Track
Come Jazzfest, this tiny horse-themed joint is packed with tourists and hungry locals alike, all lining up for a famous BBQ shrimp po-boy. From the gumbo to the duck tenders, every item on the menu is a must-try.
