These Are The Jobs With The Biggest Pay-Increase Potential

Hoping to get a raise this year? Better be in the right industry. Finder.com analyzed data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics to uncover the careers most likely to provide pay increases and then broke it down by gender. Finder’s Consumer Advocate, Jennifer McDermott, said, “For many people looking to boost their income this year, attempting a pay raise in their current position appears much more achievable than changing companies, upskilling in a new field or starting a side hustle. However, as our research shows, not all industries are equal when it comes to boosting salary bands.”

The study found that not only does being a veterinarian allow you to hang out with cute animals all day but it also is the field most likely to give you a raise. Veterinarians experienced the highest pay increase (38%), from 2016 to 2017. Following that were surveying and mapping technicians (36.74%), producers and directors (28.03%), financial clerks (27.4%), emergency medical technicians and paramedics (26.32%).

The survey then broke it down by gender comparing wage increases for men and women. For the top 10 pay raises men still experience a 7% higher wage increase than women, on average.

The top three careers with a high potential for pay raises for women are construction and extraction occupations (26%), meetings, convention, and event planners (25%) and insurance underwriters (23%).

Men working as a surveying and mapping technicians experienced the largest pay raise increase for their occupation at 41% followed by producers and directors (39%) and emergency medical technicians and paramedics (36%).

10.  Athletes, coaches, umpires and related workers/stationary engineers and boiler operators (20%)

“While this analysis gives a guide of the likelihood and potential increase of a raise, it’s important to remember that if you have been in your current role for a year or more, and have been making a valuable contribution, you are in a good position to request an increase.

Make sure you are well prepared with an outline of why you deserve a raise, detailing specific achievements and why you are deserving. Also, come prepared with a figure and be prepared for your boss to negotiate.

If you receive a no, request feedback on why, what you can do to work towards an increase and a likely timeframe for a future discussion,” McDermott noted.
