11 Reasons Why People Are Obsessed With Wegmans

@lizzyrojo8

There’s no such thing as a fairweather Wegmans fan. If you’re into it, you’re REALLY into it. If you happen to run into someone and the topic of Wegmans comes up, you’ll probably hear “Best. Store. Ever” or “Ugh, I wish I had one near me.”

The privately-owned Rochester, New York-based supermarket chain, with more than 90 stores across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, has a national cult-like following. It could be the fresh produce, sustainably sourced seafood, designated cheese caves, reasonable prices or neighborly staff, but everyone has their own reasons for loving this playground of a grocery store. Here are 11 reasons why people are obsessed with Wegmans.

1. Locally-Sourced Produce

It’s hard to know where your produce comes from when you’re shopping at large grocery store chains. Wegmans has developed a reputation for its fresh produce that’s sourced locally. The store partners with regional farmers along the east coast to make sure it’s stocked with the best seasonal produce. Wegmans also has its very own organic farm and orchard in Canandaigua, New York.

2. Sustainably-Sourced Seafood

From the sushi department to the seafood counter, Wegmans is careful about how it sources its fish. Wegmans works with Sustainable Fisheries Partnership to decide where to responsibly source its seafood in order to protect our natural resources. It’s easy to be in the dark when it comes to buying seafood at a grocery store, which makes Wegmans that much more trustworthy.

3. Reasonable Prices

Wegmans is basically like a combination of Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods with the feel of an open-air market. It carries big food brands, as well as its own store-brand products. Prices do vary in between competitors at Wegmans, but the majority of prices are really reasonable for the quality you’re getting. If you’re a regular at Wegmans you know where to find the deals. You can also find a ton of family-sized items that can save you a little money.

4. Prepared Foods

Your average grocery store might have prepared food, but Wegmans goes way beyond the traditional fare. It has all kinds of appetizers, sides, breakfast foods, family meals, sandwiches, soups and snacks, as well as a hot food bar. You’ll also find certain ingredients packaged together so you can easily buy everything you need for a meal in one swoop.

5. The Employees Are Awesome

There’s a family feel when you’re inside Wegmans and you can tell that the employees enjoy their jobs and each of them knows his or her department to a T. Make friends with the cheese guy and you’ll be sampling for days. Wegmans has made the Fortune 100 Best list of the top companies to work for every year since the list began in the late 1990s. According to Fortune, workers have flexible schedules, extensive avenues for growth and promotion opportunities and there’s a family feel to the working environment. Wegmans has given over $81 million in educational assistance to more than 25,000 employees. When customers see friendly faces on workers it makes the whole shopping experience infinitely better.

6. Freshly Baked Breads

On top of all of the custom-made sheet cakes and decorated cookies, Wegmans has a whole bakery with freshly baked bread. You’ll find fresh loaves like sourdough, rosemary olive oil, apple cider golden raisin, skillet corn bread, oatmeal raisin, jalapeno cheese, chocolate cherry and Irish soda bread. The variety of fresh bread is insane.

7. The Cheese Is Cave-Aged

Wegmans was the first supermarket to open its own affinage cheese cave facility in New York, where high-tech cave-like rooms are controlled to match the same temperatures and humidity of European cheese-ripening caves. Wegmans gets to control the finished cheese product this way. It usually has about 300 specialty cheeses in the store at any given time and you know they let you have all the samples.

8. The Store Has All The Random International Snacks You’ve Been Searching For

If you’re looking for random international foods, Wegmans has no shortage of options. You’ll find everything from tamales to dumpling wrappers to Vietnamese pho broth to Golden Krust Jamaican beef patties.

9. The Store Doubles As A Restaurant

After you do your grocery shopping you can grab a bite to eat at the Wegmans Market Café. It has sushi, sandwiches, pizza, salads and a hot bar with all kinds of international and freshly-made foods.

10. Subs

It’s always a dangerous idea to go grocery shopping when you’re hungry. So for better or worse, Wegmans conveniently has a sub shop. You can fill up on massive meatball or Italian subs before you start your journey around the store. One sub could probably feed two people. Bonus: the subs are on the cheap side.

11. It Sells Wine And Beer At Every Location

Wegmans is one of the only grocery stores to sell wine and beer at every location. In states like Pennsylvania with strict liquor laws, it has a separate Wegmans wine and beer shop right next door. You can craft your own six packs of beer, buy full kegs and all kinds of wine and liquor.
