Find Out Which Grocery Delivery Service Is Right For You

@vons

Raise your hand if you’re a city dweller and have been personally victimized by overpriced, yet low quality, bodegas you’re forced to shop at instead of a real grocery store. If your hand is up, you probably have already heard of a little thing called grocery delivery. The concept isn’t new, but by now, there are a number of companies getting on board with the trend. So which service should you go for? Here’s how to choose the best grocery delivery service for you.

PeaPod

One of the oldest food delivery sites, PeaPod launched online in 1996 and currently offers delivery in 13 states and Washington DC.

The Pros: The site has 12,000 different products, as well as bulk items with frequent deals, which you can find in its newsletter. You can expect a full organic product list, as well as deli options and prepared foods.

The Cons: The company uses plastic bags, but you can recycle them by giving your plastic bags back to the delivery driver.

The Cost: Delivery fee of $6.95 for orders over $100 and delivery fee of $9.95 for orders under $100.

FreshDirect

FreshDirect isn’t a new service, but the updated site boasts an incredible user experience complete with an easy-to-navigate in-season food list and meal kits. The company operates in parts of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Washington DC.

The Pros: FreshDirect includes a two-month delivery deal for just one penny, and then after your two-month trial, you can opt for the six-month DeliveryPass, which is $79, as opposed to spending $8 for a weekly delivery every time.

The Cons: Reviews say overall, products are more expensive than those from other delivery services. But that excludes all sale items.

The Cost: $79 for a six-month delivery membership (which is worth it if you shop a lot) and $129 for a yearly membership.

Jet

Deemed by Time Out as the best option for thrifty New Yorkers, Jet offers hundreds of products from produce to skincare to small appliances. With service just mainly in New York right now, Jet is the new kid on the block.

The Pros: Jet is known for saving you money. It gamifies your savings as you shop, showing you discounts and, at the end, how much money you actually chipped off your final order. You don’t need a membership to shop, and delivery is free for orders over $35.

The Cons: Reviews say that Jet’s produce may not be as fresh as competitors’, like produce from Amazon Fresh.

The Cost: Free delivery for orders over $35 and $5.99 delivery fee for orders under $35.

Amazon Fresh

Not to be confused with Amazon Pantry, Amazon Fresh delivers produce and other perishable foods directly to your door. This service ships nationwide, unlike most other options, and you are free to purchase other Amazon products, like your favorite book or that new toaster, with your order.

The Pros: Though it started out with an insane $299 annual fee, Amazon Fresh has rolled back its membership fee to a manageable $14.99 monthly price tag tacked onto Prime membership. The bonus: You can order other Prime products to be included in your Fresh order. That means no double-orders.

The Cons: The membership is a bit pricier than other options, at least at first. But keep in mind that the fee includes delivery costs, so it may even out depending on how frequently you shop.

The Cost: $14.99 monthly fee. Can’t get any more straight forward than that.

Vons

From parent company Safeway, Vons offers same-day delivery if you order before 8:30 a.m. Mostly delivering to the California coast and New York, this delivery service learns your order patterns and suggests new items based on your past orders.

The Pros: You register on a club card, so the online shopping experience is safer and more personal. The site learns what kind of food you’re into and stores that information for your next time shopping.

The Cons: The delivery cost is higher than most other options, so this service really is for the insanely busy, because customers can just re-order their last order with the click or tap of a button.

The Cost: $9.95 delivery fee for purchases of $150 or more and $12.95 delivery fee for purchases under $150.
