Sami Allen

We’ve had a lot of chili in our day, and we bet you have too. We also bet that you have a strong preference for how chili should be made — with beans or without, hot or mild, topped with cheese and sour cream or plain. We get you’re all about your family recipe, but you gotta trust us here…

This recipe brings the best of all the chili worlds together in one pot. It’s practically a throw-everything-in-and-wait dish, meaning it cuts down on prep and dirty dishes. A marriage of spices shine bright in this chili, and it even includes a slightly sweet kick from cinnamon. Yep, cinnamon! The best part? If you’re impatient, this meal can easily be done in 30 minutes, though we’d strongly recommend letting this baby simmer for a few hours to bring out those glorious flavors. And glorious they are.

  • 1 lb ground turkey
  • 1 16-oz can black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 16-oz can red or kidney beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 poblano pepper, diced
  • 1 sweet onion, diced
  • 1 28-oz can crushed tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce
  • 1 tsp. adobo spice
  • 1 tsp. cumin
  • 1 Tbsp chili powder
  • 1/2 Tbsp cinnamon
  • Shredded cheese, for topping (optional)
  • Sour cream, for topping (optional)

Instructions

In a large pot, add onion, poblano pepper and ground turkey, breaking up the turkey into small pieces. Cook for five to seven minutes, or until turkey is cooked through. Add the beans, crushed tomatoes, water, cayenne pepper, hot sauce, adobo spice, cumin, chili powder and cinnamon. Stir, cover and simmer.

Enjoy after 30 minutes, or if you want to amp up the flavor, leave on the stove to simmer for a few hours, stirring occasionally. Top with cheese or sour cream, if you’d like.
