Interested in experiencing the beauty and rich culture of Asia? You have a ton of locales to choose from, and you’re probably already thinking about cities like Hong Kong and Tokyo. These underrated destinations, however, may change your mind about where you’d like to go.

From its sandy beaches to its modern high rises, Busan is the go-to beach city of South Korea. You can hang by the seaside observatory or, if you’re feeling spiritual, head to Haedong Yonggungsa, a 14th-century Buddhist temple.

2. Chengdu, China

If you haven’t heard of Chengdu, just know that it’s been able to fly under the radar while simultaneously hosting more than 14 million residents. That’s pretty badass. Hang out at the New Century Global Center, which boasts a big mall and water park. If you’d prefer to get a little exploring in, head to the countryside at Mount Qingcheng and bathe in the hot spring.

3. Jakarta, Indonesia

Jakarta, which has a population of more than 24 million people, is constantly growing despite the fact that it probably doesn’t get as many tourists as, say, Tokyo. You can visit the national monument, among other historical sites, and thrill seekers should visit the Dunia Fantasi theme park.

4. Fukuoka, Japan

Functioning as a port city, Fukuoka is home to 1.5 million people. It doesn’t come across as a go-to vacation spot, but you should consider it. Visit Canal City, which is the central multi-story shopping center, or enjoy a picnic in one of its many peaceful parks.

5. Chiang Mai, Thailand

Bangkok is certainly an experience, but don’t just stop there. Head to Chiang Mai, which is a well-populated yet mountainous city in Northern Thailand. You can swank it up and stay at the Four Seasons, visit dozens of temples or even go on thrilling excursions like a night safari.
