Here’s Why Apple Pie And Cheddar Cheese Are An Awesome Pair

@burnettdairy

An apple pie without the cheese is like a kiss without the squeeze.

This is a phrase you’ll hear when the topic of apple pie comes up in certain parts of the Midwest, New England and regions of Canada and Britain. Many people are loyal to ice cream and would be shocked at the idea of anything but scoops on their pie, but those who believe in the union of sweet, sharp and salty feel pretty strongly about apple pie with cheddar cheese.

There’s no denying if you’ve ever tried this salty, sweet and sharp combination, that a quality sharp cheddar really brings out the flavor of the baked apples. Why do you think people make fruit and cheese platters? It just works. If you’re worried about abandoning your ice cream, here’s a recipe for cheddar ice cream that you can scoop on top of your apple pie.

Since England is known to be the birthplace of cheddar, it makes sense that Yorkshire claims apple pie with sharp cheddar cheese as a traditional dessert. The cheddar is usually served in slice form and perched on a warm slice of tart apple pie. Sometimes it’s served on the side, melted under a broiler or mixed into the pie crust.

In certain regions of the United States where the economy relies heavily on dairy, the concept of apple pie with cheddar is strongly suggested. In Vermont, there was a law passed in 1999 designating the apple as the state fruit and apple pie as the state pie. It requires a good faith effort to serve either a glass of cold milk, a 1/2 ounce or larger slice of cheddar cheese or a large scoop of vanilla ice cream with a slice of apple pie. In other words, people take their pie and cheese very seriously.

If you want to ease yourself into the idea, try this recipe for apple hand pies with a flaky cheddar crust. Apple pie and cheddar are a time-honored tradition, so forget your morals and see what the fuss is all about.
