7/1/19 Newsletter: How To Know If You’re In Ketosis

For everyone who is going keto (or seriously considering it), here’s one critical thing you need to know: If you don’t maintain a state of ketosis, you’re not technically following a keto diet. Basically, if you end up consuming too many carbohydrates (even by a tiny margin), then your body won’t receive the memo to derive energy from ketones rather than glucose. There are factors to tell if you’re in ketosis: bad breath, weight loss, appetite suppression and short-term fatigue, just to name a few. But to truly know if you’re in ketosis, try these three measurement tools: check your breath, check your blood or check your urine. Read on to find exactly how to measure each so you can keep on track. [Swirled]
Life Hack Of The Day: Aromatherapy Edition
Aromatherapy can help with everything from nausea to migraines and relaxation. When your head begins to pound with pain try sniffing a soothing scent like mint or coffee beans. For a DIY aromatherapy session, add dots of lavender or peppermint oil to your temples or wrists. And when you want a burst of energy try a citrus blend to put a pep in your step.
Health
If you want to get some summertime exercise in without spending an hour in a dimly lit gym, head outdoors and soak up the sun. A study showed that people who spent time exercising outdoors enjoyed taking a trek more than those who did a similar workout on a treadmill. Don’t forget the SPF! [Swirled]
Career + Finance + Tech
If you’re spending hours staring down at your laptop or phone each day, you could be suffering from “tech neck.” Constantly flexing your neck muscles in this position forces your cervical spine out of alignment, creating a ton of pressure on your neck and causing major issues like spinal disk injuries, chronic headaches and more. Ouch. Get ahead of the problem by stretching every 20 minutes — or stepping away from screens altogether. [Swirled]

Grilled chicken doesn’t have to be boring — if you follow a few easy rules. First, be sure to season it thoroughly and if you have the time, you really should brine your bird. Dry or wet brines are both an option, it just depends on how much time you have. In case you didn’t know, chicken and lemon pair really well together. Read on to find more ideas and some recipes to experiment with. [The Daily Meal]
Recipe Of The Day: Transform dinnertime into a keto-friendly meal with an easy zucchini and chicken recipe. Sautee chicken breasts in olive oil until cooked, set aside and prepare a bed of zucchini noodles (you can make them with a spiralizer or just buy them already cut). Sautee the zucchini with garlic, cumin and black pepper until cooked. When the zoodles are cooked, top with the cooked chicken and an aromatic blend of scallions, mint leaves, pistachios and a touch of lemon juice. Yum! [Happy Body Formula]
A quick tip from yours truly: If you don’t have a spiralizer, and can’t find zucchini noodles, don’t worry. You can still enjoy the same noodle-like texture by using a vegetable peeler to make long strips of zucchini and then cut them lengthwise to form strands.
