Between traditional airlines like Delta and American and newer ones like Spirit and Jetblue, there are tons of options when it comes to the airline you choose for U.S. travel. Thankfully, you won’t have to go it alone — the annual Airline Quality Rankings report breaks down the pros and cons of each domestic carrier. The best U.S. airline in 2017 may surprise you. Alaska Airlines nabbed that top honor.
According to the report, 12 airlines were judged on mishandled baggage, denied boardings, consumer complaints and on-time arrival. Alaska Airlines blew its competitors out of the water, unseating Virgin America, which claimed the number one spot since 2011.
Alaska Airlines, which is absorbing Virgin America, received great marks on all levels. In general, the airline industry saw the best-ever performance on mishandled bags and involuntary denied boardings.
There are tons of pros for flying with Alaska Airlines including a strong likelihood of on-time arrival, comfort and customer satisfaction. The main drawback is that the carrier lacks routes to the East coast and midwest airports. That will change though when it officially merges with Virgin in the next few years.
