If you’ve been searching for a shrine of French fries your entire life, look no further. Everyone’s favorite crispy snack has an entire museum in its honor.
The Frietmuseum in Belgium claims to be the first and only longstanding museum dedicated to fries. Right next to chocolate, French fries — or “potato fries” as they call them in Belgium — are the most classicly known Belgian food.
Where does the potato come from? Who invented the fry? How do you make perfect fries? These are all questions you’ll gain answers to when you visit the holy grail of fries. Do you feel like pondering all of your fry fantasies while taking photos with life-sized fry sculptures, obscure hanging potatoes and funky fry art? Well, then you’re on your way to the right place.
You might be shocked to learn that French fries were actually invented in Belgium, not France, which is why they call them potato fries. It turns out that we’ve been giving false credit all along. Maybe we’ll start calling them Belgian fries and see who catches on…

The Frietmuseum covers two floors of the Saaihalle, a gorgeous old building in Bruges, Belgium. Since Bruges is home to all of the sought-after Belgian pommes frites, it makes sense that there would be a museum there. It’s open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and you can purchase a ticket for 7€ (or about $9).
Potato fries in Belgium are just about as popular as ice cream in the United States. In Belgium, there are thousands of fry vendors, each with a different technique and topping variety to offer. The potatoes are often cut, twice fried, salted and served. If you’re going to be in a fry-centric city, you might as well go for the real deal.
