Here’s A Little King Cake Food Porn That’ll Get You In The Mardi Gras Spirit

There’s one dessert that reigns supreme when Mardi Gras rolls around.

Typically, a king cake is made of rich brioche dough with a hole in the center and a variety of fillings ranging from cinnamon to cream cheese to chocolate, but the recipe can vary depending on the city.

The colorful glaze on top is usually what’ll catch your eye. The icing is green, gold and purple, representing the traditional Mardi Gras color trio. The green represents faith, the gold stands for powder and the purple symbolizes justice.

And the most exciting part is the tiny plastic baby figurine (or bean) that gets buried inside the batter. Some say it has a religious significance, but it’s fun regardless of your spiritual tendencies. Whoever finds the plastic baby or bean gets some special royal treatment leading up to Mardi Gras and (hopefully) enjoys good luck throughout the rest of the year.

So with that said, here’s some pretty king cake inspiration that’ll get you in the Mardi Gras spirit.
