Tequila drinkers are about as dedicated as they come. We all have that friend who comes back to the table with a round of tequila shots and downs them like they’re water. And that same friend probably knows that there’s a huge difference between a cheap tequila at the bar and the smooth tequila you buy in liquor stores.

If you think all smooth tequilas require a baller budget, you’re missing out. Here are nine brands of the agave-based spirit that won’t break the bank.

1. Milagro Tequila — $23

Milagro tequila is made from 100 percent estate-grown and hand-picked blue agave. The heart of the agave is roasted in brick ovens that are made with volcanic-rich soil. Milagro is a clear tequila with a lot of depth. It’s also triple-distilled, which makes it extra smooth.

2. Espolon Reposado — $23

Aside from the awesome label, Espolon Reposado is a golden-colored tequila that’s aged in white oak barrels for six months to give it a balance of agave and mild wood flavors.

3. Tequila Cabeza  — $36

This smooth tequila has notes of black pepper and citrus and a honeyed agave taste. Tequila Cabeza Blanco is made with champagne yeast to give it a fruity taste, and it’s typically unaged, clear and bottled right after distillation.

4. Cimarron Blanco Tequila — $27

Tequila Cimarron Blanco is produced using a slow distillation process that gives the spirit tons of bright character. The tasting notes here are roasted agave, delicate pepper, lime zest and a touch of floral.

5. El Jimador Blanco Tequila — $18

El Jimador Blanco is a tequila made with 100 percent agave. You’ll come across some grapefruit, white pepper and agave notes here. It has a quick and smooth finish with a mild alcohol burn and a citrusy aftertaste.

6. Calle 23 Blanco Tequila — $30

Calle 23 is an unaged tequila with herbaceous and lime notes. It’s perfect for sipping on its own, but it also makes killer margaritas — or even tequila negronis.

7. Lunazul — $20

Lunazul Blanco is aged seven to nine years in the field and then brought immediately to the distillery. Each batch is distilled twice in cognac stills. This tequila has some citrusy notes of orange, grapefruit and lime with a little vanilla sugar. Lunazul has a slightly smoky finish and it’s easy to sip neat.
