Workout Tip Of The Day: Exercise safely outdoors this summer by sticking to early morning workouts, choosing your workout clothes wisely, applying sunscreen and more.

If you’re looking to take advantage of the sunshine this summer by working out outdoors, there are a few things that can help you exercise safely without risking scary things like heat stroke and severe dehydration. Here are 3 tips that’ll help you make the most of your outdoor workouts in the summer sun.

1. Workout in the early morning.

The earlier you get moving, the less severe the heat will be. By working out outdoors on summer mornings you’ll still be challenging your body’s endurance since the temperature will be higher than usual, but you won’t be putting your body in total shock by exercising in the full-on summer afternoon heat.

2. Be mindful of your workout clothes.

When summer arrives, you need to swap any cotton workout clothes for synthetic, moisture-wicking fabrics so your skin can breathe as much as possible as you heat up while you exercise. So read those clothing labels and pay attention to the fabrics you choose!

3. Don’t forget the SPF.

When you’re rushing to get out the door for your morning run, It’s easy to forget to first put on sunscreen. But if you’re exercising anytime after sunrise in the summer, you’ll need to protect your skin from free radical damage and brutal sunburns. So lather on the SPF! Keep an eye on the UV index each morning (which your weather app on your phone can tell you at any point in time) to get a better sense of the sun’s current strength.
