Jon Stewart and his wife Tracey will build a 45-acre farm and animal sanctuary in Colts Neck, New Jersey, after the couple received approval from the town’s planning board in early January.

Stewart, who stepped down as the host of The Daily Show in 2015, purchased the Hockhockson Farm property on Route 537 with his wife for $4 million in September 2016. The couple originally planned to turn their 12-acre farm in Middleton, New Jersey, into the sanctuary, but later opted for a larger property. Tracey Stewart, a noted animal welfare activist, is the author of the book Do Unto Animals.

According to NJ.com, the Stewarts have received board permission to host educational programs for up to 100 people twice a month, as well as up to six special events or fundraisers for up to 200 guests. Public tours, as well as programs on sustainable agriculture and animal welfare, will be hosted.

The couple reportedly agreed to a number of requests from the planning board as well as potential neighbors in order to help the application along.

“So much of the project is about community,” Stewart said. “So you want to the community that you are invested in to want you to be there, and to be invested in it as well. You want it to be mutual love, not unrequited love.”

The animal sanctuary is slated to open in 2018.
