Heightened Security Presence at Trump Tower Is Hurting Business in Midtown

The security detail assigned to protect Trump Tower, home of President-elect Donald Trump, has brought business in the surrounding Midtown area to a halt in the days since the election.

David Chang, whose restaurants in the neighborhood include Ma Peche, Milk Bar, and Fuku+, noted on Twitter that 56th Street and 5th Avenue had become significantly more difficult to navigate and that many local businesses were hurting as a result. The Polo Bar, Lavo, Betony are located near Trump Tower. Customers on their way to Gucci or Tiffany’s, however, have been reported to pass through checkpoints with relative ease.

The cost of keeping a security presence at Trump Tower and protecting the President-elect is upwards of $1 million a day, according to NYC officials. That figure is not likely to change even after the inauguration, as Trump has indicated that he will be returning to New York regularly. His wife Melania and son Barron are expected to stay in New York at least until the end of Barron’s school year.

Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall,  and the Beacon Theatre were among the major New York City venues to have been involved in a significant credit card security breach that spanned nearly the last year, the MSG company announced in a statement. The breach is believed to have affected customers who purchased snacks and merchandise, but not ticket sales. The scope of the breach is not yet clear, but the company says that the stolen information includes “credit card numbers, cardholder names, expiration dates, and internal verification codes.”
