The Future Is Looking Bright Thanks to Food Delivery Robots

Thanks to Starship Technologies, a robotics start-up launched in 2014 by the co-founders of Skype, D.C. and Silicon Valley residents can now get their food delivered by a robot through both Postmates and DoorDash. These six-wheeled robots are slightly under two feet tall, weigh around 40 pounds, and can travel up to four miles per hour. These innovative machines move at a “walking speed” and will be accompanied by handlers until Starship can make these robots totally self-sufficient.

You no longer have to pretend like you have friends over to order an entire pizza for yourself because these robots are judgment-free. The rover operates like a delivery person, except it doesn’t accept tips — it goes to the restaurant, gets packed up with food, goes directly to the specified address to make the delivery and then it starts all over again (it’s expected to make around 10 deliveries per day). The handlers are there to intervene if something goes wrong and to jot down notes on the robot’s progress.

Starship received $17.2 million in seed funding which will help the company to further its development and launch pilot programs in new markets. Cheers to cool technology, even though humans are becoming obsolete!
