Wellness Tip Of The Day: Power off all your tech two hours earlier each night for better sleep and other benefits to your wellbeing.

Most of us spend way too much time on our phones, computers, tablets and more. But as difficult as it is to unplug, turning off all of your devices at a designated time each night could help you get better sleep and free up your time for other, more meaningful activities.

How to do it.

If you have a regular bedtime and wake-up time during the week, why not also set a time each night to stop looking at and using your technology? Say you go to bed at 10 p.m. each night. Consider turning off your phone and powering off your laptop and tablet (or at least stashing them out of your site) at 8 p.m. so you have two hours to do more relaxing activities before bed. This tactic will give you more time to chat with your roommates, read a book, play a card game, draw or write in your journal. We did the math for you and found that by turning your tech off just two hours earlier each night for a full year you could end up getting 30 days’ worth of your life back! Do you really want to waste a whole month of your life aimlessly scrolling through your social media feeds? We didn’t think so…

The Benefits.

Ditching tech for a couple of hours before bed will force you to step out of your comfort zone, which can be a good exercise in and of itself. It’ll also help you get better sleep, which is crucial for your health and your ability to focus and be productive during the day. The blue light emitted by the screen of your tablet, computer and smartphone mimics daylight and stimulates you, making it harder for you to drift off into dreamland. What’s more, ditching your tech in favor of face-to-face conversations each night can help you strengthen your real-life relationships. Being close to your friends and family will make you happier in the long term than getting 100K+ followers on Instagram. Read on to learn more about the benefits of tech-free time. [Swirled]
