Daily Fit 5/9/19: This Exercise Helps You Run Faster
Health Tip of the Day: Adding mountain climbers to your exercise regimen can make you a faster runner.
Why It Works: Whether you’re looking to get a new PR in your next half marathon or you’re just looking to run faster than your neighbor on the treadmill, adding mountain climbers to your weekly exercise regimen can get you one step closer to your goal. Because of their explosive nature, mountain climbers aid in developing power and explosiveness in your lower body which, in turn, helps you push off faster and stronger when you’re running or sprinting. This exercise is also great at elevating your heart rate, challenging your balance, coordination and stability and giving you a full-body burn — which is great for runners and non-runners alike.
How To Do Them: Assume a high plank position. Bring one knee at a time in to meet your chest, without letting your feet hit the ground. Go back and forth like this, alternating the leg that you use. Perform the exercises as quickly as you can while maintaining good form, keeping your booty low, your back flat and your abs engaged. Keep running like this for 45 seconds to one minute for three sets. If you’re doing this exercise specifically to increase speed, try to remain on the balls of your feet at all times and switch leg positions as fast as you can. [Greatist]
