Dietician Recommends That You Eat This Snack Before A Long Workout

Finding the right foods (and the combination of foods) to give you the right amount of energy before a workout can be difficult. What snacks are too much or too little? Will a certain carb and protein combo provide a lasting boost? And of course, can you grab it on the go if you need to? According to dietician Adele Hug, one surprising snack, a marmalade and butter sandwich, is the perfect pre-workout snack to get you through a strenuous workout.

It’s random, right? Of course, other than the fact that it was Paddington Bear’s favorite meal. At first glance, the sandwich doesn’t seem to be the most healthy choice, but here’s where it starts making sense:

Hug recommends spreading 30g of marmalade and 15g of butter onto two 15g slices of white bread. The 54g of carbohydrates from the 380-calorie sandwich are easily absorbed into your blood, and the low levels of fat and fiber ensure that you won’t have any stomach issues during your workout. It’s perfect for a lengthy cardio session. Wash it down with a 200ml glass of orange juice two to four hours before your workout for ultimate effectiveness.

Hug’s research stemmed from preparations for the Virgin Money London Marathon on April 23 to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support. The runners were encouraged to try the sandwich before the race, since it’s deemed a safer choice than a loaded breakfast full of fat and fiber.

We’ll say this: we’re definitely intrigued. Maybe Paddington had it right all along.
