Asian Food Lovers, You’re Going To Go Nuts Over This Mall

@nytfood

Imagine if you could be engulfed by the smell of handmade dumplings at all times. At the New World Mall in the heart of downtown Flushing, Queens, you’ll find more than 32 food vendors selling all kinds of Chinese, Malaysian, Thai, Vietnamese, Korea and Japanese foods, plusĀ a huge Asian supermarket, Jmart. Oh, and everything’s pretty inexpensive. You can go with a $20 bill and eat like a queen.

It’s like as if all of the dim sum you could ever want is lined up in a row for you. You don’t have to take the subway or walk a half hour to get from one place to the next, it’s all right there. People are hand-rolling these dumplings right in front of you and it can be overwhelming to pick what you want. You can order eight dumplings and only shell out $5. It’s truly magical.

This isn’t like your average suburban food court where you can expect all of your food in styrofoam containers. You get your soup dumplings in bamboo steamer baskets. Some tables even come with built-in heaters for hot pots. This place is no joke.

If you’re looking for more than potstickers, go for the fried octopus balls, takoyaki, or sesame and scallion pancakes and egg tarts. If you go with a group, get a bunch of plates from different vendors and have one big feast. Food is served bubbling hot or steaming, so you know everything’s whipped up fresh. Sometimes you even get your food in a wok. Locals will tell you it’s some of the best Chinese food you’ll find outside of China.

Know before you go: you have to put a $5 deposit down on the containers and bowls your food is served in. After you’re done eating you just bring up the dishes and get your deposit back. If you’re looking for Asian food outside the tourist traps of Chinatown, New World Mall is a world of its own.
