Wellness Tip of The Day: Using your imagination could help you make healthier choices
What Science Says: Relying on your imagination, not your willpower, to get you motivated and to the gym in the morning could prove more effective according to research conducted at the University of California, Berkeley. In a study involving two groups of participants, researchers found that when participants viewed their choices as a series of chain reactions rather than just focusing on their preferences in the current moment, they were more likely to be motivated to make better decisions because they actually considered the not-so-ideal future consequences of their impulse choices.
How To Do It: Instead of focusing on how comfy your bed feels the next time you’re tempted to hit the snooze button in the morning rather than going on your pre-planned morning jog, shift your focus to future consequences that are likely to occur if you oversleep. You’ll probably end up skipping breakfast because you’re late for work and have an unnecessarily stressful morning, all the while being grumpy that you weren’t able to get your butt out of bed to exercise. If you actually focus on the negative consequences that you’re not-so-great impulse decisions are likely to create rather than just relying on your willpower, you’ll increase your chances of making the better, healthier decision in the short term which will lead to a healthier, more gratifying lifestyle in the long-term.
