Psyched for all the home-cooked meals you’re going to have this holiday season? We are too, and we can’t think of anything better than enjoying that honey ham and eating the leftovers in the following days. The problem? Some of us have a long trek back to our own homes after the family fun is over. If you’re close enough to take a bus or train, we have the perfect approach for you. Here’s how to transport those priceless leftovers back to your place flawlessly.

Step 1 — Pack those leftovers in proper Tupperware containers.

It’s tempting to dump leftover food into Ziploc bags because they fit so easily in the nooks of your fridge, but when it comes to travel, using them is a sure way to have your food squished. Use plastic Tupperware containers like these (or glass, if you want to live on the edge).

Step 2 — Freeze your food the day you’re traveling.

When everything’s packed up, stick your leftovers in the freezer (even just for an hour or two) the day you travel. Keeping the food as cold as possible will keep it fresh.

Step 3 — Keep your leftovers cold.

To keep your leftovers cold during your trip, pack your containers in an insulated tote bag like this one, or load your containers into a bag with ice packs. As long as your food stays relatively cold, you can safely enjoy it later.

Transporting leftovers doesn’t have to be difficult. All you need are some key tools like appropriate containers and insulated bags to keep your food fresh. Now all you have to do is make room for it with all your other stuff…
