Workout Tip Of The Day: Rest days are extremely important for recovery and progress towards your fitness goals. Here’s why.

Although the number of rest days you should take varies depending on your physical fitness and workout regimen, aim for at least one rest day per week in order to avoid injury while still staying fit. Here’s why rest days are so important.

Rest day benefits.

A rest day gives your muscles, ligaments and tendons time to recover and repair after exercise. If you don’t give your body at least one recovery day per week, it won’t be strong enough to take you through a second week of exercise without compromising on form or performance. This can make your workouts less effective and can even lead to injury. Failing to give yourself a break from exercise can also cause overtraining syndrome, with symptoms like decreased performance, fatigue, insomnia and loss of appetite. Does that sound healthy? We think not.

What to do on your rest day.

Just because you’re giving your body a break from the gym doesn’t mean you should lie on your couch all day, motionless. You should aim to do some type of physical activity daily, even if that means walking your dog once around the park. A day-long binge drinking sesh won’t help your fitness goals either as it’ll keep your body from recovering optimally, so be aware of how you spend your rest day.
