This Newly Discovered Life Advice From Albert Einstein Still Holds True Today

Happiness is a fleeting emotion, yet so many of us strive to find a way to make it a constant in our daily lives. And that’s not a new tendency of mankind. Even intellectuals like Albert Einstein pondered this concept more than 100 years ago. But we think his newly discovered theory from way back when is one of the most relevant ones we’ve heard yet.

In 1922, Einstein penned the following note to a courier in Tokyo in lieu of a tip for his services. Translated from German, it reads, “A calm and humble life will bring more happiness than the pursuit of success and the constant restlessness that comes with it.”

Clearly, the note was far more valuable than some pocket change. It recently sold for $1.56 million at an auction house in Jerusalem to an anonymous European bidder, breaking records for auctions of documents in Israel.

The money is certainly impressive, but the sentiment in the note itself is priceless. It’s so easy to lose track of this perspective — especially in modern society. We live in a world of climbing ladders and pushing for our next achievement, keeping us ambitious and motivated, which are both positive traits. But if we don’t learn to balance them with things like connecting to our inner selves and finding peace in the little moments, we will end up living pretty lopsided (and therefore unhappy) lives.

Einstein was clearly brilliant in so many ways, and we should consider ourselves lucky for being able to ponder his million-dollar advice for free.
